Two letters between Cocke and Woodrow Wilson concerning the presidency of Washington and Lee University, after the death of William Lyne Wilson. As a member of the Board of Trustees, Cocke offered the job to Wilson, then a professor at Princeton University. Wilson declined the offer.

Cocke was a Class of 1878 alumnus of Washington and Lee University, a graduate of the University of Virginia law school (1881), and the first mayor of the city of Roanoke, Virginia.
